A year ago, my daughters and I announced the publication of Anusha of Prospect Corner, our Sri Lankan-American retelling of L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. I wrote this middle grade novel with my twins, who, like Anusha, grapple with being the only redheaded members of their biracial family. The writing process wasn’t always easy — see The Challenge of Collaborative Writing (When Your Co-Authors Are Your Kids) and How I Betrayed My Children While Writing With Them — but it was a worthwhile experience that helped us explore our racial identities and brought us closer together.
Today, I’m taking a moment to thank everyone who grabbed a copy of our book, read it, spread the word about it, and/or reviewed it on their blogs, Goodreads, or Amazon. Thank you for making room in your busy lives for Anusha.
Here are some of the highlights:
- Reviewed on Huntress of Diverse Books: “A biracial main character. And even better, a main character that’s biracial and a quarter Sri Lankan descent. This is the closest I’ve ever got to reading about a main character that is similar to me.”
- Reviewed on Covered in Flour: “Anusha of Prospect Corner is a delight from the first word to the last. A modern, diverse and multicultural retelling of Anne of Green Gables, Anusha introduces Anusha Smyth, who leaves her father’s house in a cookie-cutter suburb she calls “Camazotz” (love the L’Engle shoutouts!) to live with her mother, Pramila Carter, and uncle Manoj in a big, old, rambling house in Philadelphia.”
- Mentioned on The Englishist.
- Mentioned on Cinderzena’s Book Blog.
- Mentioned on Robby Robbin’s Journey.
- Mentioned on Grab the Lapels.

Retellings are absolute favorites of mine! Anusha sounds absolutely delightful.
Congrats on making a dream come true, and may you and your family have a terrific 2018 ❤
Thank you! The project was a lot of fun. I hope you have a wonderful 2018 too!
Thank you! 🙂
Happy birthday, Anusha! Just downloaded the book and I’m looking forward to reading it. (It’ll be a welcome respite from Fire and Fury) 😉
Thank you so much! We really appreciate your support. How is Fire and Fury? I’m planning to read it, but I’m not in a rush. I can’t stand the idea of Trump invading my reading time, despite being intrigued by the book’s content.
I bought it (Kindle) mostly because trump wanted it banned. I’ve read some of the excerpts online already, and it’s about what you’d expect. I try to do my creative writing in the mornings and read in the afternoon/evening, although this isn’t something I want to read just before sleep!
Good point! I’m going to download the Kindle ASAP, though part of me wants a hard copy to keep as a historical artifact. I probably won’t read it for a couple of weeks, though.
It’s an adorable project. Well done.
Thank you! It was so much fun.
